Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 15:33
On this date in 1978 Gaylord Perry becomes the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. Perry gets the honor with a 21-6 record and a 2.72 ERA for the San Diego Padres. Perry earlier won the Cy Young Award pitching for the Cleveland Indians in 1972 with a 24-16 record and a 1.92 ERA with 29 complete games.
The writer of Proverbs wants us to understand a few truths that will help us in our daily living. We are to see that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Fear is used not in sense of being afraid of God, but having a “holy awe” of Him. God is God and we are not! Secondly true honor in God’s eyes comes from humility. We need to realize that God expects great things from us done with a servant’s heart drawing all the attention to Him and not ourselves. We will live happy and productive lives for God when we give Him the proper place in our lives, number one, and when we serve Him to glorify Him and not ourselves.
1. How do we put God in His proper place in our lives?
2. How do we serve Him and give Him the praise and glory?
3. Is God the most important part of our lives right now? Why or why not?
The Cy Young Award is an important honor for a Major League pitcher to receive. Honor from God in serving Him well, giving Him the praise and glory is the honor a believer should strive to receive daily!
