Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 10:11a
On this date in 1933 The California Winter League holds Sachel Paige Day to honor the legend’s accomplishments in the multi-racial league. The right hander takes no prisoners throwing a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts against Joe Pirrane’s team made up of Major League players who came to the west coast to earn some extra money. Paige said,” Not to be cheered by praise, not to be grieved by blame, but to know thoroughly one’s own virtue or powers are the characteristics of an excellent man.”
The writer of Proverbs tells us today that the “mouth of a righteous man is a fountain of life”. We must remember that water was at a premium in that area of the world. Literally sources of water would sustain life. When we live our lives by the ways of God, we are able with our words to bring life to others. Just think about that for a moment. When God controls our lives and we live for Him, we are able to bring His life to others by what we say. What a blessing and a responsibility!
1. How can our words be like a fountain of life?
2. What does it take to be that kind of influence in the world today?
3. Are our words a fountain of life? Why or why not?
We have a responsibility to live for God by living like God. When we are on that path of living with God, we can make a difference in the lives of others by what we say!
