May 29: Doing the Right Thing

Scripture Lesson: 1 John 3:18

On this date in 1989, in a hastily called news conference in San Diego, Phillies third baseman and future Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt tearfully announced his retirement from baseball, to be effective immediately. “I could ask the Phillies to keep me on to add to my statistics, but my love for the game won’t let me do that,” Schmidt said. Schmidt, who became a Christian in 1977, did the right thing by relying upon his faith in making the hard decision.

Several themes appear often in John’s writings, and one of those is love. John wants us to realize that the right thing to do when it comes to love is not just to love in words. Our love for not only God, but for our fellow man, must be shown with actions and in truth. It is important for people to see how we love them by our actions. Love without actions is hollow and not genuine.

  1. How do we show God with our actions that we love Him?

  2. Think of the people closest to us: how do we show them love through our actions?

  3. How do we love our fellow man with our actions?

Mike Schmidt did the right thing when he retired. We must do the right thing when it comes to loving God and loving others. Our actions speak much louder than our words.
