the Right Thing
Scripture Lesson: 1 John 3:18
On this date in 1989, in a hastily called news conference in San
Diego, Phillies third baseman and future Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt tearfully
announced his retirement from baseball, to be effective immediately. “I could
ask the Phillies to keep me on to add to my statistics, but my love for the
game won’t let me do that,” Schmidt said. Schmidt, who became a Christian in

Several themes appear often in John’s writings, and one of those is
love. John wants us to realize that the right thing to do when it comes to love
is not just to love in words. Our love for not only God, but for our fellow man,
must be shown with actions and in truth. It is important for people to see how we
love them by our actions. Love without actions is hollow and not genuine.

Mike Schmidt did the right thing when he retired. We must do the
right thing when it comes to loving God and loving others. Our actions speak
much louder than our words.
