March 9: Walk Off

Scripture Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Today is the birthday of former big league player Aaron Boone, now an analyst with ESPN. A highlight of Boone’s career was his walk-off home run in the 11th inning of Game Seven of the 2003 American League Championship Series, as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 6-5. Boone’s home run came against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. “It’s always hard to hit a knuckleball,” Boone said afterward, “So when I saw Wakefield, I was thinking about taking some pitches. Then I stepped out of the box and took a deep breath and decided I had been thinking too much, I was just going to swing. That’s what I did on the first pitch I saw.”

Today Paul wants us to see what a walk-off in faith looks like. In our text, Paul is telling the Corinthians that he becomes all things to reach men so that they might respond to the Gospel. When someone accepts Jesus as his or her Lord and Savior, “Boom!” That is a walk-off. Once and for all, the power of sin has been defeated. Satan has thrown his best pitch to keep that person away from the Lord, but he just gave up a spiritual home run. When a sinner runs home to accept the free gift of God’s grace, there is no better victory in this world. Paul wanted to reach as many as he could by sharing the Gospel, and so should we!

  1. Have you ever been a part of a spiritual walk-off by giving your heart to Christ?

  2. Have you ever been a part of a spiritual walk-off by sharing your faith?

  3. Why is it important to reach people for Christ where they are in life?

There is no greater victory in the world than when a person gives their life to Jesus Christ. That, my friends, is one great walk-off!
