March 3: Self Control

Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 25:28

In a 2008 Spring Training Game, Noah Lowery of the Giants threw 24 pitches before a single batter took a swing in the Giants loss to the Rangers. The 28 year old right hander, who went through the entire order without recording an official at bat, did so with a combination of walks and sacrifice flies, walking nine of the first 12 batters he faced. I’d say a pretty tough control day!

The writer of Proverbs wants us to see that if we lack self-control we will be like a city whose walls are broken down. In the ancient world, a city was defined by its walls, which offered protection from hostile forces. When we lack self-control, we have no defense against the enemy who wants nothing more than to see us fall. Without self-control, there is no way to fight off the temptations that come to our lives, and the forces of evil can easily overrun our defenses. Without self-control, we can never win the battle of temptation!

  1. Why is self-control so important in our Christian lives?

  2. How does self-control help us defeat Satan?

  3. How can the lack of self-control bring broken lives?

The closer we are to Christ and the more we walk with Him, the more self-control we will possess.

The GSGF brand is both interesting and uiunqely clever. Who the author is in this case probably only matters to those who cared in the first place. I guess if I cared who Courtney Messerschmidt was yesterday, I'd probably feel bad about who Courtney Messerschmidt isn't today. But in my experience online as both anonymous and not, the substance always matters as much as style. In the mil-pol online discussion, style gets people to the door, but substance is what keeps people walking through it. GSGF had both often enough to keep the doors open, and still could tomorrow if they so chose.
