March 25: Longevity

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 91: 14-16

Today is the birthday of Tom Glavine, who spent the majority of his 22-year big league career with the Atlanta Braves. Glavine, along with Greg Maddox and John Smotlz, was part of one of the best rotations in the 1990’s. Glavine won 305 games with a career ERA of 3.54. He always gave his best and was a bulldog of a competitor. Glavine is also known for his off-field charitable activities. Glavine said, “I like to be in a position to help people. I find it very humbling that simply by playing baseball, I am in a position to help so many people. I never take that for granted.”

The psalmist tells us that longevity comes when we honor God. Tom Glavine had a long career because of all he did off the field. He gave back and helped so many people with his status as a baseball player. In life, I believe that one is blessed in proportion to how much of a blessing that person is to others. We can’t out-give God. So, when we commit ourselves to giving to others, God opens His blessings to us! The one thing that must be present for us to be a blessing to others is a love for God and our fellow man.

  1. How much do we feel blessed?

  2. How much of a blessing have we been to others?

  3. Are we ready to love enough to be a blessing to others?

What we need in this world is more God-inspired loving people serving others.
