March 20: A Definition of Love

Scripture Lesson: John 15:12-17

On this date in 1973, in a special election, Roberto Clemente was elected to the Hall of Fame. The five-year wait rule was waived by the board of Directors after Clemente died in a plane crash while carrying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua on December 31, 1972. In his last regular season at bat, Clemente hit a double off Mets pitcher Jon Matlack for his 3,000th hit.

On the eve of His death, Jesus taught his disciples what love is all about. These verses from John’s Gospel record how Jesus instructed us to love one another, saying there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Jesus knew that in a few short hours He would be doing just that, laying down His life for us all! We are called to bear fruit and to love one another. It is not always easy to love others, but the mark of our faith is in how we love. There could be no better example of love for us than to learn from the love Jesus has for you and me.

  1. Why was Clemente’s death Christ-like?

  2. How do we love one another?

  3. Who do we need to let know this day we love them?

Loving one another, not always easy, but so needed in our world today!
