March 2: Short Name, Short Verse

Scripture Lesson: John 11:35

Today is the birthday of Hall of Famer Mel Ott. In his 22-year career, all with the New York Giants, Ott hit 511 home runs, scored 1,859 runs, and drove in 1,860 runs. The number of autographs he was asked to sign made Ott thankful that his name had only a few letters. He said, “Every time I sign a ball, and there have been thousands, I thank my lucky stars that I wasn’t named Coveleski, Wambsgnass, or Peckinpaugh.”

Today’s scripture lesson is the shortest verse in all of Scripture, “Jesus wept.” I can remember when we had to learn a verse of Scripture for RA’s (“Royal Ambassadors,” a Bible and mission study group for boys). We all chose this verse because it was so short and easy to memorize. The verse occurs in a story about how Jesus’ friend Lazarus had died. Jesus saw how upset Lazarus’ sisters  were. Jesus loved Martha and Mary as well as Lazarus, and he wept for them. Have you ever lost someone close to you? It is not easy for us when a loved one dies, and it was not easy for Jesus either. Jesus loves each of us with that kind of love. So this shortest of all verses in the Bible is packed full of love!

  1. Thank Jesus for loving you with a deep caring love.

  2. How best can we return that kind of love to Him?

  3. Why is this verse so packed with love?

Shortest name, shortest verse both packed with a lot of power!

He's out of his mind. Also I would like you all to pray for my Aunt Lyndsay and Uncle Billy. They are expecting their first baby which was due in April but we got news thngiot that my Aunt Lyndsay has high blood pressure and they are going to induce her labor and my baby cousin Emma will be born on Thursday. The doctors say she will weigh about 2 pounds and she will have to be in neonatal intensive care unit for 6 to 8 weeks. I know that Jesus can help the baby live and come out healthy. I know that Uncle Billy is also worried about his wife and the baby and I hope she lives. And I know that my parents are also happy for Aunt Lyndsay and their family. I hope you and Mrs. Rachel get to see her also. Love you. Good night. Alayna.
