18: Who is Your Teacher?
Scripture Lesson: Matthew 23:1-10
On this date in 1984, Charlie Lau passed away at age 50, after a
lengthy battle with cancer. Lau earned his fame as one of baseball’s best
hitting instructors. His best years were spent in Kansas City, where his prize
pupil was Hall of Famer George Brett.
The entire 23rd chapter of Matthew is an indictment
against the scribes and Pharisees, two groups within first century Judaism who
sought to be particularly pious. They were “teachers of the law,” but Jesus accused
them of not practicing what they preached. They were more of a burden than a
help in assisting others to follow God’s teachings. They loved the prestige of
their position and enjoyed the praise of people. The only teacher truly worth
following, however, is Christ, He is the one who will teach the right way of
living. Jesus always taught that God was more interested in having people
follow His ways because they love Him than in following a set of do’s and
don’ts. It is not about us; it is about serving and living each day for God! In
looking for someone to help you grow in your faith, find a humble servant who
loves the Lord and does his/her best to follow Him each day.
-
Think of
someone who models Christ in the way they live.
-
Ask that
person to help you grow in your faith.
-
Remember,
humble loving service is the key to being Christ-like.
Beware of those who are more interested in their place of
prominence than in serving the Master!
