June 7: A Perfect Day

Scripture Lesson: Matthew 5:43-48

On this date in 2008, Yankee outfielder Johnny Damon went 6 for 6, including a walk-off hit to close out the Yankees’ wild 12-11 victory over the Royals. Damon was the first Yankee player to collect six hits and only the second player to do so at Yankee Stadium.

In the last verse of our Scripture lesson today, Matthew records Jesus’ challenge for us to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. The preceding verses give us a clue in how to do just that. We are to love not only our neighbor, but we are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. We are to love all, no matter how or if it all they love us. Perfection comes in total love, just like the total perfect love God has for each one of us!

  1. Why is it hard to love everyone?

  2. Why should we aim for this kind of perfection?

  3. How can we accomplish loving like this?

God wants us to strive to be perfect and to do so we must love everyone. What a difference we could all make for God by asking Him to teach us how to love this way!
