June 4: Age Is No Excuse

Scripture Lesson: Joshua 14:10-15

On this date in 2004, Julio Franco at 45 became the oldest player in Major League history to hit a grand slam home run. Franco connected in the first inning, and his grand slam was the difference in the Braves 8-4 victory over the Phillies at Turner Field.

We are introduced to a rather old warrior in our Scripture lesson today. Caleb was 85 years young, still feeling great and ready to claim the city of Hebron as his share of the Promised Land. Some 45 years before, Caleb and Joshua were the only two out of 12 spies sent into the Promised Land who came back believing that, with God’s help, Israel could defeat it. As a result, Moses declared that Israel would wander in the desert for many years, and only they would survive to see the Promised Land again. As Caleb asked permission to go after Hebron and the surrounding hill country, he told Joshua he still believed he would win with the Lord’s help, and he was successful in conquering its powerful defenders. Afterward, according to our last verse, the land had rest from war.

  1. Why is age not a factor in serving God?

  2. Why was Caleb blessed by Moses and then by Joshua?

  3. How does God want you to serve Him today?

Age is no excuse in not serving God. We all have tasks to complete for Him no matter how old or how young we are today.
