June 27: Can’t Hide
Scripture Lesson: Joshua 7:20-26
On this date in 1986, San Francisco Giants second baseman Robbie Thompson set a new Major League record by being thrown out four times in a single game on attempted steals. Bo Diaz had Thompson’s number, throwing him out in the fourth, sixth, ninth, and eleventh innings. Despite Thompson’s four outs, the Giants went on to win the 12-inning game 7-6 over the Reds.
Israel should have had an easy victory over the city of Ai, but they were routed from the field. When Joshua came before the Lord to asked how this could have happened, God told him Israel had sinned. The people gathered the next day and cast lots – believing that God would direct the lots – to determine who had sinned. The lot fell on a man named Achan, who confessed that he had broken the commands of God by stealing some things from Jericho. Achan and his family lost their lives and all they had. God turned away from His anger and Ai was destroyed the next day.
Have you ever tried to cover up a sin?
How did that work out?
Can God and sin reside in the same heart? Why or why not?
Thompson got caught four times trying to steal in a single game. We will be caught every time by our sins if we do not confess.
