June 23: Pride

Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 11:2

On this date in 1963, after taking Dallas Green deep, Jimmy Piersall rounded the bases in the correct order while running backward to celebrate his 100th career home run. The Mets outfielder reportedly thought of the stunt after being disappointed by the lack of attention he was receiving.

We find some great advice from the writer of Proverbs in today’s Scripture lesson. When pride enters into the picture, disgrace is not far behind. Not only did Piersall disrespect the game, some would consider his running the bases backward to be disgraceful. In life, we are to draw attention to Christ, who died for us and enables us to serve Him. It is not about you and me, it is all about Jesus and what He has done for us and through us. As the writer of Proverbs tells us, with humility comes wisdom. Life is not about promoting ourselves; it is all about Jesus.

  1. Why is it hard to have humility in how we live?

  2. How can we show the world our life is all about the Lord?

  3. What are some other ways players and coaches show pride in the game?

Championship baseball teams are made up of players who are all in for the team. Championship living is when we are all in for the Lord and it is all about Him, not us.
