July 8: Kept Out

Scripture Lesson: Luke 23:39-43

On this date in 2002, in an effort to set a record for the lowest attendance at a professional baseball game, fans were blocked from entering the game between the Charleston Riverdogs and the Columbus Red Stixx. When the Minor League game became an official game after the top of the 5th and the recorded attendance was zero, fans were allowed to enter the gates and watch the rest of the game.

In our Scripture lesson today, Jesus was on the cross between two criminals. One of the criminals cursed Jesus and said “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us.” But the other criminal was quick to note that they were getting what they deserved. He asked Jesus to remember him when He came into his kingdom. Jesus assured the man he would be with Him in heaven that very day. The first criminal was kept out of heaven because of his unbelief. The second criminal enjoyed heaven because he did believe.

  1. What can keep someone out of heaven?

  2. James wrote, “Faith without works is dead.” How can we be sure our faith is alive?

  3. When is it too late to confess believe in Christ?

If Jesus came back today, would you be kept out of heaven? Praise God today that He is patiently waiting for us to believe in His Son and follow Him. Let’s get to believing and following today.
