July 7: Throwing

Scripture Lesson: Jonah 1:1-17

On this date in 1975, during an 8-6 loss to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Giants outfielders Gary Thomasson, Bobby Murcer, and Chris Arnold each threw out a runner trying to score. That feat had not been done since 1905 when Cubs outfielder Jack McCarthy himself threw out three runners trying to score.

If you think the story of Jonah is just a fish story, you have missed the boat. In our passage today, Jonah is instructed by God to go to Nineveh and preach against the city. Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria, the enemy of Israel. Jonah knew in his heart that if he challenged the people to repent, they would, and God would spare them. So Jonah went to the coast, hopped on a boat and went in the opposite direction from Nineveh. A great storm came up, so bad that the seasoned sailors were worried. Jonah told them he was running from God and volunteered to let them throw him overboard in hopes that God would call off the storm. When they did, the storm ceased. God provided a large fish to swallow Jonah. Inside the fish for three days, Jonah decided he would follow God.

  1. Why did Jonah invite the sailors to throw him out of the boat?

  2. Have you ever tried to run from God and what He wants for your life? How did that work out?

  3. What does God want you to do today for Him (ask Him!)?

It is useless for believers to run from God and what He wants for our lives. Instead of running From God, doesn’t it make more sense to run TO God?
