July 6: All Stars

Scripture Lesson: Hebrews 11:39-40

On this date in 1983, in the 50th anniversary of the All-Star Game at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, the American League routed the National League 13-3 for its first win since 1971. The American League broke open the game with a seven-run fourth inning highlighted by a Fred Lynn grand slam, the first in All-Star Game history. It was also Lynn’s fourth All-Star homer, tying him with the great Ted Williams for the American League record.

In Hebrews 11, the writer calls to mind some of the great men and women of faith, God’s All-Stars. The one thing each of these had in common was faith: faith that was strong enough to withstand whatever the world would throw at them. To be an All-Star in God’s eyes, we too must have that kind of faith. Never forget that the great men and women of the Bible were just plain ordinary people like you and me that God gifted to do His work. God is still in the gifting business today, seeking to get His work accomplished. He needs each one of us to step up and be men and women of faith, getting His work done in this world. Let’s live with such commitment that we, like the people in Hebrews 11, could be All-Stars in God’s Hall of Faith!

  1. Count the times the word faith is used in the 11th chapter.

  2. What does faith enable us to do?

  3. What is the promise for us found in verse 40?

Serving God and following Him in faith will be better than we could ever imagine. Let’s step out in FAITH and follow Him.
