July 1: Firsts
Scripture Lesson: Revelation 1:17-18
The first college baseball game was played on this date in 1859. There wasn’t much defense, but it was a beginning: Amherst defeated archrival Williams College 73-32 (some accounts have the score as 66-32). The game was played near the corner of North Street and Maplewood Avenue in Pittsfield, Mass.
Our Scripture lesson for today comes near the beginning of John’s revelation from God. These verses refer to Christ who calls Himself, “the First and the Last, and the Living One who was dead but now lives forever.” What a wonderful reassurance this is for us as we begin the month of July, the midpoint of the year. Jesus is the beginning and the end. He has overcome the grave and now lives forever. We too can join with Him in spending eternity in heaven. Death for us in this world as believers is only the beginning of living in heaven eternally.
What does it mean to you that Jesus is the First and the last?
How did Jesus overcome death once and for all?
Take a few moments to reflect on spending eternity with Jesus in heaven.
Praise God today that Jesus is alive now and forever, paving the way for us to spend eternity with Him in heaven!
