January 15: Benefits

Scripture Lesson: Psalm 103:1-5

On this date in 1942 President Roosevelt responded to a letter he received from Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. In the letter, Landis asked the president if we should be playing baseball in the wake of America entering World War II. Roosevelt answered, “Playing baseball would be good for Americans and encourage the owners to have more games at night to give war workers an opportunity to attend games.” Roosevelt saw the benefits of not only playing baseball, but being able to attend the games of the national pastime. He knew the benefits baseball could bring to a country at war.

In Psalm 103, David reminds each of us of the benefits of knowing God. He goes on in verses 3-5 to give us a great list of these benefits: God forgives our sins, heals our diseases, redeems us, crowns us with love and compassion, satisfies our desires with good things, and renews us like the eagle. I would say that’s a pretty impressive list of benefits right there. Sometimes we get caught up in the business of life and forget all that God does for us each and every day. We need to be reminded of all the benefits God brings to us on a daily basis.

  1. Make a list of all that God brings to your life.

  2. Now stop and thank Him for the benefits he brings each day to you.

  3. How can we show God our appreciation for all he does for us?

As we have taken an inventory of God’s benefits this day, may we be constantly reminded to live a life of thanksgiving and praise to Him for His benefits and great love for us!
