January 12: We are Family

Scripture Lesson: 1 John 3:1

In the Hall of Fame election of 1988, Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates was elected. “Pops” Stargell was a lifelong Pirate; during his career he hit 475 home runs and drove in 1540 runs. The 1979 World Champion Pirates prided themselves as being like a family with Stargell as the “Pops.” Stargell would award stars to team members for outstanding contributions to victory, and players proudly displayed the “Stargell Stars” on their hats. The team even adopted “We Are Family,” by Sister Sledge, as their theme song. Their unity and hard work enabled them to become World Series champs in 1979.

John reminds us today that we are family – no not as Pittsburgh Pirates, but as part of a greater family – the family of God. God loves us so much that He calls us His children. As believers, we are indeed part of God’s family with everyone who believes in Him. Wow, what a blessing indeed to be a part of God’s family with believers all around the world! God’s family never gets crowded: there is always room for everyone. One of the characteristics of John’s writings is that he often writes about love. Isn’t it great to know God loves us like children and cares for us each day?

  1. What does it take to be a part of God’s family?

  2. Why is so easy to take that for granted?

  3. What can we do to bring others into the family of God?

We are family with all those who believe in God, as He is our Heavenly Father. So today let’s share His love!
