February 9: Praying

Scripture Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

On this date in 1951, the St. Louis Browns signed former Indians pitcher, Satchel Paige, to a contract. Paige had been out of baseball since 1949. One of the greatest pitchers of all-time, Paige’s best years were spent in the Negro Leagues. He was the first Negro League star elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971. Paige said, “My pitching philosophy is simple: keep the ball away from the bat.” He was also known for saying “Don’t pray when it rains if you don’t pray when the sun shines.”

In his closing words to the church at Thessalonica, Paul offered the words of wisdom we read today. “Be joyful always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances.” So often we use prayer as a 911 service. “Oh God help me, I need this or that, God give it to me.” We often pray only when we are in need. Prayer is simply talking to God. How would we like it if someone we loved only talked to us when he or she needed something? Do you think God might feel the same way about us? Paul tells us to pray all the time. Take time to simply tell God hello and share the good times, too. Talk to Him!

  1. How can prayer deepen our relationship with God?

  2. What does it mean to you to “pray continually”?

  3. Take a few moments and talk to God, share some of your life with Him.

Take time each day to spend with God in prayer, it will be time well spent.
