February 8: Being a Leader

Scripture Lesson: Joshua 1:6-9

On this date in 1956, Connie Mack died at the age of 93. Mack was the founder of the Philadelphia A’s franchise in 1905, and helped to found the American League. In his 50 years with the A’s, Mack won nine pennants and five World Championships. He also finished last 17 times, while winning 3,731 games and losing 3,948 games. A true leader and a true gentlemen, Mack always wore a suit and tie as he managed.

In today’s Scripture lesson, the children of Israel are preparing to cross the Jordan River and begin the conquest of the Promised Land. Moses had died, and now Joshua is leading the people. God gave Joshua a pep talk at the beginning of his ministry as a leader, calling Joshua to remember God’s constant presence, to be strong and courageous, and to obey God always by knowing and doing His Word! When God calls us he is always with us to equip us to do His work. A good leader always follows God’s Word and always obeys Him. We can be assured of His presence as Joshua was when we serve Him by leading others.

  1. How can we be a leader in baseball?

  2. Why is it important to know and obey God’s Word?

  3. How do we know God will be with us?

Be ready for the challenge of leadership God has in store for you by knowing and obeying His Word.
