Bob “Ish” Smith
Area Director for FCA in Southern Illinois

Bio: Grew up in Dallas, Texas loving sports but being a very “average” athlete. Went to two small Christian colleges and got a great education and had wonderful experiences (Central College in Kansas and Greenville College in Illinois. Met my sweet wife (Joanna) (now 54 years) and did a Masters degree from Southern Illinois University right after college. Then taught and coached baseball at Taylor University for three years before returning to my alma mater (Greenville College) where I served as professor; coach; head of physical education dept.; Assistant to the president; VP for institutional advancement; and then president…all in 38 years. Took two years off to get my doctorate at Florida State University and coached baseball there during those two years. Served as a baseball executive for the NAIA baseball; United States Baseball Federation; and the International Baseball Association and had some great experiences. When I was with the NAIA I had FCA breakfasts for our coaches and players in the national tournament. I attended the FCA breakfasts at the ABCA conventions for close to 50 years and was blessed by these and our late night get togethers with coaches for sharing and worship. Joanna and I are blessed to have two wonderful children (Chuck and Cyndi) and now they have given us five super grandkids. We are blessed to have a wonderful church and many, many wonderful friends, many right here in Greenville. After reading back over this, it is obvious that I am “blessed”, which is so true. I was hired by the FCA in 2001 to have a part time job as the Area Director and I love that opportunity.

Favorite Scriptures: I love the promised in Isaiah 40:31 But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not be weary; they will walk and not faint.

1st Corinthians 1:5 which says: For in Him I have been enriched in every way.
The story in John 13 of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.
